What do I do if my child has suicidal thoughts?
Advice on what to do if your son or daughter is experiencing suicidal thoughts.
What if my child has suicidal thoughts.
If a young person is having suicidal thoughts stay with them and keep talking to
them let them know you care.
- Listen to the young person and take their thoughts and feelings seriously – be patient and supportive.
- Don’t judge the young person or try to persuade them that they should not have suicidal thoughts.
- Reassure the young person that they are not alone, and they can get help for the way they are feeling.
- Encourage the young person to seek professional help.
If possible, contact their GP or mental health professional - you can also call the NHS on 111.
It is important to get help if the young person has threatened suicide, this can include taking the young person to Accident and Emergency if urgent and the young person is in crisis. Other options include contacting charities who are experienced in dealing with young people’s mental health crises.
